Attaining Minimalist Design

Minimalism

is a trend many of my clients seem to be attracted towards.  The words that come to mind when describing minimalism are – clean lines, being uncluttered, and simplicity.  This concept is harder to achieve and is more deliberate than one may think.  The space can seem cold and unlived in if not achieved properly.

It’s all about choosing the correct furnishings to place in the space and still layer in a monochromatic feel.  A successful minimalist space incorporates on open floor plan, lots of light, comfortable functional furniture with sparse pops of color.  The palette is usually neutral with texture to add contrast and interest, but not take away from the beauty of mixing materials.

If designed successfully,

one can create a soothing inviting space that will stand the test of time and never go out of style, or become trendy.

In my experience, it’s much harder to edit your space and take out items that are dated, do not serve a function or give you little joy, than to start with a blank slate.  As consumers we are taught at an exceedingly young age to buy, buy, buy! To purchase give’s one a happy feeling and endorphin rush.  The feeling wears off and most of the time it is not solving the issue of a better designed or updated space.

Most of my clients tell me at the end of our project, that hiring a Designer was worth every penny.  To have a happy, well thought out space, in the style they feel most comfortable is priceless.

When looking at your next space:

Think what essentials are needed, closed storage for an uncluttered space, color and textures that blend harmoniously.  These key ingredients will give you a minimalist timeless space, as well as offering you peace & happiness.
